That Is Why I Leave Manuals Instead of Recommendations: Why Explanation Outlives Recommendation | Interpreting Coordinates Ch. 10
Interpreting Coordinates
The Human Role in an Algorithmic World
PART I · Chapter 10
Why Explanation Outlives Recommendation
I no longer try to persuade anyone about what is good.
I do not justify choices on behalf of others, nor do I organize taste in advance.
What I intend to do is simpler.
To record what exists here, by what structure, and in what role.
1. Why I Stopped Recommending
Recommendations travel fast. But they do not last.
They reach emotion, but rarely pass the test of time.
That is why I stopped leaving recommendations.
Instead, I leave information that allows choice.
This information may not appear attractive at first glance. But when the moment comes, it must be callable again.
Records that endure must be searchable, comparable, and capable of being referenced again.
2. Fixing the Criteria of Record
Every record I leave follows clear rules:
- I do not write about what I have not directly experienced
- I do not make judgments when hospitality or compensation is involved
- I describe strengths and limitations together
- I distinguish who it is suitable for, and who it is not
These are not claims of moral superiority.
They are the minimum conditions required to prevent trust from collapsing.
A record cannot be built on a single favor.
3. Emotion Is Not Removed—It Is Repositioned
I do not erase emotion. I simply refuse to place it first.
Emotion belongs after the choice. Structure belongs before it.
The moment this order is reversed, a record stops being explanation and becomes assertion.
4. These Records Are Not Advertisements
These texts do not promise sales.
They do not guarantee outcomes. They do not demand immediate reaction.
They do one thing only.
They organize an entity into a form that can be referenced over time.
That is why these records are closer to reference documents than to promotion.
5. Why This Method, Now
This decision is not a matter of preference.
In an environment where algorithmic systems increasingly filter, rank, or structure information before people encounter it, structure can become legible before sentiment is interpreted.
The form of what remains has already changed.
Rather than declaring the change loudly, I chose to quietly adjust the format.
6. As Part I Approaches Its End
In Part I, I raised questions, accumulated discomfort, and exposed a structural shift.
I will not explain further here.
From this point forward, these criteria will be fixed more clearly and then applied to actual records.
7. A Question Left With the Reader
This question remains with you as well.
What are you recommending?
And what are you explaining?
