This chapter does not evaluate speech. It examines why speaking alone no longer guarantees that a record remains easy to retrieve or reuse.

What follows is not a rejection of expression, but an observation of how position becomes necessary when reaction alone is no longer enough.

We speak constantly—about restaurants, people, brands. We say things like:

It was good.
It was disappointing.
I was moved.
I wouldn’t recommend it.

Words are everywhere. And yet, strangely, so little remains easy to call back.

Why?¹

1. There Is a Lot of Talk, but Very Little Record

The internet is filled with opinions, reviews, and reactions. Give them time, however, and many become harder to find, recommend, or call again across contexts.²

This is not because there is too little content. One reason is that much reaction-centered writing takes remarkably similar forms.³

Many texts begin like this:

  • “Among the places I’ve been…”
  • “Personally, I felt that…”
  • “My impression was…”

These sentences feel familiar to humans. But on their own, they provide limited relational or positional information to a system trying to categorize, compare, or retrieve them.⁴

2. We Record Reactions, Not the Subject Itself

Many texts assume they are describing an object. In practice, what they record most clearly is often the writer’s reaction.

This distinction matters.

Describing the subject asks:
Where does this belong?

Recording a reaction asks:
How did I feel about it?

Reactions can accumulate. But reaction alone does not establish position.⁵

Position emerges when reaction is placed within relation, comparison, and context.

Human emotions may fade or change with time. A clearly recorded position, however, remains embedded in context.

3. No One Draws the Whole Before Judging the Part

When we encounter something, we usually ask:

Is this good?
Is this bad?

But if we want to establish position, another question comes earlier:

Within its category, where does this sit?

To ask that question, several conditions must first be established:

  • What is the whole?
  • What is the comparison group?
  • Along which axis are we comparing?⁶

Much writing skips this step and moves directly to judgment.

As a result, the text connects to very little.

It floats, unanchored.

4. Words Without Position Are Harder to Reuse

Systems that classify, rank, or retrieve content can process impressions. But impressions alone provide limited information about pattern, relation, or position.²

The structural questions are different:

  • Which group does this belong to?
  • What role does it play?
  • What does it replace—and what does it not?

A text that cannot answer these questions may still be searchable, readable, or popular. But it becomes harder to retrieve or reuse in another context.

It may be sincere. It may be carefully written. It may even attract attention for a moment.

But if it carries little structural context, much of its usefulness can remain tied to that moment.³

5. We Conclude Too Quickly

The phrase “To get to the point” has become common. But in many cases, the point arrives too fast—before any coordinates are established.

**A conclusion asserts.
A position locates.**⁷

A conclusion can close inquiry.

A position gives the next question somewhere to begin.

6. Why So Little Stays

The problem of our time is not a lack of expression.

It is how rarely position is clearly recorded.

Everyone speaks.

Few say:

“It is here.”

Without a marked position, there is less to return to.

7. The Question That Follows

What if, before saying good or bad, we first recorded position?

What if, before describing how something felt, we defined the role it plays?

Would that record become easier to compare, retrieve, and reuse?

This series is built around that question.ᴬ

Closing

There are many words.

There are very few coordinates.

And words without coordinates become harder to carry into the next era.

2. Retrievability and coordinates describe, in this series, the conditions under which information can be categorized, related, and recalled across contexts. The claim is not that systems ignore emotion-related data, but that such data becomes more reusable when it carries explicit relation and context.

3. The term editorial indicates selection, prioritization, and structural organization of information, not authorship or moral judgment.

4. References to systems or AI denote algorithmic information-processing environments broadly, not sentient or emotional agents. Such systems may process emotion-related signals, labels, or preference data; they do not experience emotion as humans do.

5. Reuse is treated here as a functional criterion in information systems: information becomes more useful across contexts when it can be recalled, recombined, or recontextualized beyond its original instance. This does not mean that information with limited reuse is literally deleted or inaccessible.
